Environmental Protection, a Lifetime Commitment
- by D. Perez

Mother Nature has been generous providing us everything that we need and it is our responsibility to keep it that way.
Environmental protection, from the word itself, is an act of protecting the environment. It could be coming from an individual, a group of people, government or non-government. It is for the betterment of Mother Nature and the human race. The environment had been destroyed nowadays because of the continuous increase of population and non-stop developing of technology. Sadly, some are destroyed permanently. Numerous government agencies began to create campaigns and gave awareness to various environmental issues.
Schools and other academic institutions now offer courses to understand the methods of environmental protection. Some of the issues related to environmental protection are waste, toxic, pollution, introduction of invasive species, loss of biodiversity and release of genetically modified organisms.
Not all waste materials are of no use. This is where waste management and recycling comes in. These can be done once you have identified the value of waste. You can start at home by providing separate bins for biodegradable & non-biodegradable materials.
Pollution, like air pollution, has been a worldwide problem. Nowadays, we are actually experiencing its effect in the form of the greenhouse effect. The weather has been unpredictable and when you look up in the sky, you will be able to differentiate the clouds from smog.
The world is losing its biodiversity rapidly due to irresponsible human activities such as large-scale mining, hunting, deforestation, massive wildlife and others. It is becoming a threat to the human race – food resources, livelihood, health, and Mother Earth’s capability of providing natural resources. It is not only for our needs, but also for the coming generations.
Invasive species are species that does not belong in a group. They are invasive because they dominate or disrupt a habitat causing loss of biodiversity. Invasive species can also bring native species into extinction.
Toxic is also a big challenge of environmental protection. The most common are toxic that came from factories which are disposed on our water system. A simple disposal of household materials thrown down the drain adds up to the problem.
Environmental protection is a global problem and a lifetime commitment. Mother Nature has been generous providing us everything that we need and it is our responsibility to keep it that way. It is not only for us, but also for our children…for the future generations. Being aware and educated of what is happening in the environment will help us on how and where to start. If each single person in the world will act now, what a wonderful world we will have in the future.
